Fencing in Yellingbo

All of Yellingbo is under one landscape overlay, and it exempts only one kind of fence: post and open wire, under 1.8 m.

One overlay, and a wire-fence exemption

Yellingbo has no residential zone. About three quarters is green wedge farmland, and all of it sits under Yarra Ranges' SLO6. Under SLO6 a fence needs a planning permit unless it is a rural post and open-weave wire fence under 1.8 m. A paling or colorbond fence around a house garden is therefore a permit question here, even at a height the building rules would allow.

ESO1 covers nearly half the locality as well, and its fence wording is unclear. Ask Yarra Ranges planning before fencing land it covers. A VicPlan property report shows whether yours does.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb, Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedules to Clause 42.03 (SLO1–6, SLO22, SLO23), Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedules to Clause 42.01 (ESO1, ESO2) and Yarra Ranges Council: building a fence.

Beside the honeyeater reserve

The Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve holds the last wild helmeted honeyeaters and Leadbeater's possum, and about a fifth of the locality is park or reserve. A fence along public land is usually yours to pay for: the Crown doesn't contribute under the Fences Act, and a council holding a public park isn't an owner. Near the reserve, think twice about barbed wire: the state's Land for Wildlife note says gliders and birds snag on it, and favours plain wire. Farm fencing has the barbed wire rule.

Clearing along an older fence

The bushfire overlay covers more than half of Yellingbo. Along a boundary fence built before 10 September 2009, in a Bushfire Prone Area, vegetation can be cleared 4 m wide, both sides together, without a planning permit. Clearing a fence line sets out the conditions.

What's the job?

How long the fence is, what it's made of now, whether the ground slopes, and whether a neighbour shares it.

A photo along the fence line and one of the worst part help with the quote.
