Fencing in Hoddles Creek

In Hoddles Creek the usual fence runs between a vineyard or berry farm and the next block, and the landscape overlay is built around exactly that kind of fence.

Vineyards, berries and tree farms

Hoddles Creek grew in the 1860s gold rush and is farm country now: several vineyards, including Hoddles Creek Estate, along with berry farms and tree farms. The planning map has no residential zone here. About half is green wedge farmland, a quarter rural conservation land and a fifth park or reserve.

Between two farms, or a farm and a house block, the sufficient fence under the Fences Act is the farm standard, and the state's example of one is post and wire. Neighbours share that cost equally; a neighbour who wants something better pays the difference. Farm fencing goes through it.

What SLO6 lets through

Nearly every block in Hoddles Creek is under SLO6. A fence needs a planning permit unless it is rural post and open-weave wire under 1.8 m. Plain post-and-wire paddock fencing fits that. Solid screens and close-mesh fences don't, so ask the council before putting one up. ESO1 also covers about three fifths of the locality, with fence wording that is unclear; Yarra Ranges planning can say whether it reaches your fence.

A VicPlan property report shows the overlays on your block.

Barbed wire by the road

Along a road or public open space, barbed wire is allowed on a block of 2,000 m² or more used mainly for livestock. Otherwise it has to be set back from the boundary or kept at least 2 m up. Lodge a Before You Dig enquiry before the post holes go in, even when you are only replacing an old fence.
