Fencing in Yering
The Ryrie brothers took up the Yering run in 1837. Today every lot in it is under the same landscape overlay, and most of it under the flood overlay as well.

One overlay over everything
Yering has 138 residents and no residential zone. It is farmland, vineyards and reserves, and the landscape overlay throughout is SLO2, the open valley overlay. Under SLO2 a fence needs a planning permit unless it is rural post and open-weave wire under 1.8 m. A post-and-rail front fence by a homestead, or a solid screen beside the highway, is a question for Yarra Ranges' planners first.
SLO2's exemption doesn't settle it on the flats, though. About seven tenths of Yering is under the flood overlay, and there any fence needs a planning permit, post and wire included. About a quarter has ESO1, whose fence wording is unclear, so ask the council about that one too.
A VicPlan property report confirms it for your lot.

Dairy cattle and horses
Yering grew on grazing and dairying after the vines of the 1800s gave way, and today has the Yarra Valley Dairy, with 500 cattle, and a 247-hectare horse agistment centre. Barbed wire is allowed along a road or public open space only where the block is at least 2,000 m² and mainly used for livestock. Where plain wire holds the stock, the state's Land for Wildlife note prefers it, for the gliders and birds that snag on barbs. Farm fencing has the rest.

Heritage places
Yeringberg's winery and stables on the Maroondah Highway are on the Victorian Heritage Register, and Yering has six heritage places on the planning map. In a Heritage Overlay a fence that can be seen from a street or a public park needs a planning permit.

Neighbouring rules
- Coldstream and Yarra Glen
- More SLO2 flats, each with a township where the rules differ.
- Tarrawarra and Gruyere
- No town streets. Tarrawarra's flats are mostly SLO2, Gruyere's farms mostly SLO6, and both leave the same wire fence alone.
