Fencing in Tarrawarra

Tarrawarra's fences are paddock fences on the Yarra flats, and the landscape overlay leaves a plain post-and-wire fence under 1.8 m alone.

Wire fences on the river flats

Tarrawarra is farmland, nearly all of it Green Wedge, on an arc of the Yarra that gives the place its name ("slow waters"). Most of it is under Yarra Ranges' open valley landscape overlay, SLO2, and the rest under SLO6. Both ask for a planning permit for a fence unless it is rural post and open-weave wire under 1.8 m. Neither asks for one for a post-and-wire paddock fence; a solid timber or close-mesh fence is a permit question.

About a third of the locality also carries the flood overlay, which needs a planning permit for a fence, plain wire included. About a sixth has ESO1, whose fence wording is unclear; ask Yarra Ranges planning if it is on your lot. VicPlan gives the property report free.

Cattle and barbed wire

The monks of Tarrawarra Abbey run a beef farm on part of the old estate. On a block of 2,000 m² or more used mainly for livestock, barbed wire may run beside a road or public open space. The state's Land for Wildlife note recommends plain wire wherever it will hold stock, because gliders and birds snag on barbs. Farm fencing covers the farm standard between neighbours, and dividing fences the notice that starts a shared job.

What's the job?

How long the fence is, what it's made of now, whether the ground slopes, and whether a neighbour shares it.
